Linking Strategies

If you're working on some SEO tactics to improve the visibility of your website, then you can't go past inbound links.

When search engines look at other sites, they take note of any links that point to other websites. The more sites that link to your site, the more credibility your site is given when it comes to determining search engine ranking relevancy.

It has been apparent for quite some time that search engines like Google and Yahoo will use the number and quality of incoming links to calculate the credibility of your site.

This calculation only tends to hold true though if the sites showing links to your site have some relevance to your niche topic.

Along with increased search engine results, you also have the benefit of being able to attract traffic from those sites linking to you from their own visitors. People who click links are showing they have an interest in your site's topic, so you know you're getting targeted traffic with can increase your profitability.

This is where it becomes important to be choosy in which sites are placing links to your site. The webcrawlers and search engine algorithms take into account the quality of the site that is linking to you. This means if you're going to ask a site owner for a link pointing to your site, you should be sure that site has good quality content along with a decent amount of traffic going to it. Just requesting a link exchange program from a website that is completely unrelated to yours may actually damage your SEO efforts.

So how do you find the good quality links? While it is possible to buy link-ins from websites seeking a little advertising revenue, this doesn't guarantee the quality of the link you're going to get. Besides there are far cheaper ways to find links into your site that you're able to control much better. Here are some tips for building relevant links.

* Contact the owner of several relevant sites that have similar keywords and topic focus as your own and ask them if they'd like to exchange links with you. This way you're both benefiting from extra back-links into your respective sites. Although this will mean that you have to continually check the outgoing links to make sure the other site is maintaining the link, it is a good way to begin your link building strategy.

*Look around the Internet for blogs, forums and newsgroups that are interested in the niche your website is in. If you find a blog or forum that will be useful join as a member and create a signature that will serve as a link back to your site. Bare in mind that whenever you make a post you must ensure you are adding value to the forum and not just trying to make a sale or pitch for your own website. The more you post valuable and helpful information than the more likely it is that people will click on your signature link to visit your site. Leave helpful comments on blogs and don't forget to leave a link to your website as part of your comment.

While leaving signature lines in forums and community mailing groups used to be a great way to build back-links, many forums now add a 'no-follow' tag so that these links are no longer as effective as they once were. But, your site may still benefit from more visitors.

Even though you want to build as many links as possible pointing to your site, quality is still the primary focus. Exchanging links with sites that are completely unrelated to yours, or buying links on link-farms can seriously damage your efforts.

This kind of link maintenance can require quite a lot of time and effort. If you're serious about building your website's credibility properly on an on-going basis, you may find that it becomes a lot more economical to outsource your efforts.

Hiring a company to achieve high quality links that will actually help your SEO and search engine visibility efforts could enhance your website's profitability and popularity faster than you could do it alone.

Maximise Content Relevance

Have you ever wondered how search engine optimisation experts use keywords to maximise their content relevance? If you have got to the stage where you have decided on a keyword theme and decided which keywords you wish to optimise your web pages with, you now need to know exactly how to implement them on your web pages.

The first thing to define is the three types of content optimisation. The first is 'stuffing' and involves filling every part of your web page with relevant content. This is a dangerous technique and will most likely get your site banned from the major search engines.

The second type of optimisation is "organic" this involve writing your content in a natural way but only using your keywords when it fits in with the natural flow of your writing. This is better than stuffing but is still lacking enough weight to put you at the top of Google.

The last method and the one you need to use in order to yield the greatest results is "focussed keyword" on page optimisation. This involves sticking to strict criteria in order to gain maximum results. Remember search engine spiders are just programming devices meaning this is exactly how your should treat them, writing for search engines and visitors should be a 60/40 compromise in favour of your visitors.

Keyword prominence is the first on page seo factor needed to be considered. Prominence literally relates to proximity of your keywords in relation to the beginning of your page. Each area of your page is viewed individually for instance your title tag should have your targeted keyword as near to the beginning of the text as possible, the same goes for your body content.

Keyword Density is another on page factor and relates to the amount of times you use a keywords in relation to the amount of other words on your web page. In my opinion you should aim for around 40 - 65 percent density in your title tags and 3 - 7 in your main body content. There is also keyword frequency to consider even though this is less important than the first two as it relates to the amount of times your keyword is used. Due to more weight been given to inbound links, keyword frequency has become slightly redundant so dont write masses of low quality content in order to improve your keyword frequency.

Last but not least is keyword proximity. Not every key phrase you pick will be able to be used in one set piece as it will make your content unnatural and maybe penalised. If this is the case simply attempt at getting the relevant words as close to each other as possible, the closer they are the more authority and relevance they will give to your pages.

Get The Basics Of SEO Right

Any new online business owner or website owner needs to know search engine optimisation in order to drive and serious traffic to their site. In order to do this you are going to need to understand the basics of SEO. I have been an SEO consultant for 6 years and want to give you a very basic insight into what you need to do in order to optimise your site from start to finish.

The first step is always going to be identifying your keywords. Use the Google AdWords keyword tool to help you find the main keywords searched for that are relevant to your product or service. You should be looking to collect 10 - 15 high relevancy and high traffic keywords.

Once you have these keywords in play your SEO efforts need to change to focusing on building a decent size keyword list. You should use all your main keywords to find different variations. These keywords will be used in the body of your website content, the main 10 - 15 keywords need to be used in your page URL's and tags.

OK it is time to implement these keywords into your site. The main 10 - 15 need to be placed in your URL, title tag, heading tags and Meta tags. You should also consider using them in the ALT attribute if you have images on your page.

The keyword variations need to be used in the body of your main content. Try to keep them dense in the first 100 words of your site, however not so dense that it looks spammy. The average keyword density for a site should be between 3 - 8 percent.

Now as a final on page factor you need to ensure you site has no usability problems or visibility problems. Submit you site to Google webmaster tools and manually check your site for broken links. Ensure that all you pages can be found no more than 3 levels from the home page or 3 link clicks from the home page.

Your biggest challenge is going to be off page optimisation and building quality backlinks to your site. You can article market, send out press releases, become involved in communities within your niche leaving your link in comments or you could simply ask other webmasters. However there are 3 important aspects to remember when building links. One, make sure the link is from a relevant page, two make sure it is from a page with a high PageRank and three, ensure you anchor your text with your main keywords. This all creates relevance and helps Google list your site under the correct keywords.

SEO is a waiting game even for an SEO consultant. The skills required to perform effective search engine optimisation will take time to learn and understand, however there is lot's of free info available online and through SEO communities.
